He's played hockey every winter since he was a kid and for the first time in over thirty years, Kimbi Daniels isn't heading to the rink. At 38, he's all but made his retirement from hockey official. Read more...
Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Brian Burke and his Western Canadian counterpart, Flames GM Brian Sutter pulled the trigger on a trade that sent seven players to new destinations, including former all-star defenceman Dion Phaneuf who now heads to the Big Smoke in exchange for defenceman Ian White.
Danny McCourt isn't a flashy guy. In fact, he's about as easy going as it gets. But he may be the man most solely responsible for shaping the way the game is called at the National Hockey League Level for the next twenty years.
Reggie Leach is in tough these days. The second year coach of the Junior 'A' Manitoulin Islanders has his work cut out for him. His team finished dead last in the Northern Ontario Junior A League last year. But last year is just that, last year. "Actually of the forty players I brought into camp this year I personally scouted them all," said Leach. "We're working on team building because we're in this thing together." When Leach says together he means it and not just the players either. Recuriting players is a tough sell for the Islanders because they don't have the budget other teams do.
MTS CENTRE-The Manitoba Moose dodged the NHL trade deadline bullet for the most part but they couldn’t dodge the Worcester Sharks two nights in a row as they dropped a 5-2 clunker in front of 6374 fans in downtown Winnipeg Wednesday night.
Manitoba got off to a quick start just 29 seconds into the contest when Marty Murray banged home a rebound off a shot that Worcester goaltender Alex Stalock should have handled easily.
Worcester evened the contest on the power play when rifled Dwight Helminen rifled a wrist shot past Moose goaltender Daren Machesney just over five minutes into the second period.
The Sharks pulled ahead just over two minutes later when Matt Jones found himself with a wide open net after teammate Frazer McLaren shot the puck and pulled Moose goaltender Daren Machesney right out of position.
Worcester put the game out of reach early in the third period when T.J. Trevelyan fired a thirty five foot wrister past Moose goaltender Daren Machesney just minute and a half into the final frame off a Ryan Vesce feed.
Vesce put the icing on the cake beating Machesney high glove side on his off wing at 5:46 to put Worcester up 4-1.
Dan DaSilva scored for the Sharks coming out of the corner and depositing a backhander through Machesney’s pads to put the game out of reach at 7:58.
Manitoba defenceman Travis Ramsey scored with just over five and a half minutes left in the contest off a sixty foot slapper to make it 5-2.
A clearly frustrated Scott Arniel told the assembled media he said what he had to say between periods and challenged his club’s professionalism for good measure following the game. “We started out okay and became embarrassingly bad in the second period,” said Arniel. “We’ve got this Jekyl and Hyde going, one good (game) one bad and we’ve been trying to find the reason but all of it comes from that room (dressing) in there.”
“I don’t know how many times a coach can scream and holler. You can take the quiet approach and sit people out or run video but you kind of run out of avenues. This is about professionalism and consistency night in and night out. Sooner or later you’ve got to figure it out and push towards a playoff spot or wallow away and win one and lose one the rest of the year.”
Moose Notes-Two notable additions following the NHL trade deadline. Defenceman Brad Lukowich and forward Jan Stastny will be joining the Moose while enforcer P.C. Labrie and injured defenceman Mathieu Schneider leave. Labrie joins the St. Louis Blues organization while Schneider was dealt to the Phoenix Coyotes.
Manitoba captain Mike Keane played in his 350th game as a Moose Wednesday night.
Daren Machesney got the start in goal for the Moose after Scott Arniel elected to give starter Cory Schneider the night off.
Jonathan Cheechoo has been re-assigned to the Binghamton Senators of the American Hockey League after a disappointing five goal, fourteen point season for the Ottawa Senators.
Cheechoo, was acquired by Ottawa in a trade along with Milan Michalek from the San Jose Sharks in exchange for Dany Heatley.
This marks the first time Cheechoo has seen the AHL since playing for the Cleveland Barons in 02/03.
